“Black Friday” because the shops start making profit? Yes and no. The media started using this term to mean the break even point for stores(which is really not true because most retailers hope to make a profit by the end of the christmas season!) “Black Friday” was started by the Philadelphia police because it was the worst day for traffic jams in the city because of all the shoppers. Secondly, many store employees say “Black Friday” because the day is so hectic with bargain-hungry customers and the stores usually have longer shopping hours on this day.

You sure it’s not cause people run all over each other, rushing to “awesome deals” as if fleeing from the black death? That seems to me a much more plausible explanation than some business-mumbo-jumbo about the colour of numbers… ;-)

I believe it´s called Black Friday because at that time in the year the stores are in the “black numbers” again, meaning that they make profit from that point on.

Da bin ich ja mal gespannt, ob der 180-Dollar-Laptop auch den Weg auf den “alten Kontinent” (nicht Pangea, Europa!) findet. Abgesehen von solchen “Sonder(lies: Ramsch)-Angeboten” werden Laptops aber das Netbook oder was immer sich daraus demnächst entwickelt, allerdings nicht verdrängen können, denke ich. Das Format ist zu praktisch und auf Dauer werden die kleinen Dinger immer leistungsfähiger, ohne dabei erheblich teurer zu werden. Da kann dann höchstens noch ein Black-Friday-Notebook mithalten. Ob sich die Autorin wohl selbst ins Rabatt-Getümmel geworfen hat…? Schließlich berichtet sie in gar großer Detailtreue von Ellenbogen-Gefechten und Kampfbereitschaft am Ladentisch. Oder waren es die vermaledeiten Schuhe, welche, ob des eigenen Preisschildes die Anschaffung weiterer elektronischer Zeitvertreiber unmöglich werden ließen? :-) -F.
